The story behind Android, the mobile operating system that transformed the world

Although at times Android seems like it has always been around, it must be remembered that in reality it has only been a little over a decade since the first official phone with this operating system went on sale.

The key decision in the history of Android was Google's commitment to make Android one operating system to open source . That allowed it to become very popular with third-party phone makers .

Just a few years after the release of Android 1.0, smartphones with the new operating system were everywhere. 12 years later, its Android 11 version is in force .

But in addition, Android became the most popular mobile operating system in the world, defeating many competitors such as Symbian , BlackBerry , Palm OS , webOS and Windows Phone .

However, Apple's iOS is the only platform that still stands as a serious competitor to Android , and that situation does not look like it will change anytime soon.

Its foundation

The history of Android began in October 2003, long before the term smartphone was widely used and several years before Apple announced its first iPhone and iOS.

Android Inc was founded in Palo Alto, California. Its four founders were Rich Miner, Nick Sears, Chris White, and Andy Rubin. At the time, Rubin was quoted as saying that Android Inc was going to develop " smarter mobile devices that are more aware of their owner's location and preferences ."

Rubin revealed in a 2013 speech in Tokyo that the Android operating system was originally intended to improve the functioning of digital camera systems.

But even back then, the standalone digital camera market was declining . Only a few months later, Android Inc decided to change course towards the use of the operating system within mobile phones

The change

In 2005, the next great chapter in Android history began when Google acquired the original company. Rubin and other founding members stayed to continue developing the operating system with its new owners.

The decision was made to use Linux as the basis for the Android operating system . That meant that the operating system could be offered to third-party mobile phone manufacturers for free. Google and the Android team felt the company could make money by offering other services that used the operating system, including apps.

Rubin remained at Google as head of the Android team until 2013, when the Mountain View company announced that it would be leaving the division.

In late 2014, Rubin left Google entirely and started a startup incubator before finally returning to the smartphone business with the ill-fated Essential in 2017.

Your logo

The now familiar logo for the Android operating system , which looks like a combination of a robot and a green bug , was created by Irina Blok while working at Google .

Blok has said that the only directive Google's design team gave him was to make the logo look like a robot. Blok also stated that the final design of the Android mascot was inspired in part by looking at the familiar bathroom logos representing "Men" and "Women . "

One thing Blok and Google decided on was to make the Android robot itself an open source project . Almost all other large companies would protect such a logo or mascot from being redesigned and used by others.

However, the Android robot has been modified and used by tons of people, all because Google allows such changes under the Creative Commons 3.0 attribution license . The Android mascot , also known simply as " Andy, " was revised alongside much of the Android branding in 2019.

Andy may have lost his body, but the new look is now much more ubiquitous across all Android brands .

Android 11

On February 18 , Google released the first Developer Preview for Android 11 . After several more public beta versions were released, the final version of Android 11 was released on September 8, 2020. Android 11 has arrived with many new features.

That includes a new Conversations notification category where all your chats from various apps are collected in one place. You also have the option to save all the notifications that appeared on your phone in the last 24 hours.

But also, a new function allows you to record your phone's screen , with audio, without the need for a third-party application. There is also a new section of Android 11 dedicated to controlling smart home devices .

However, the best Android 11 features you need to know Pixel phones have a unique feature of Android 11. It uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to control which applications appear on the base of your phone.

Google put together its traditional statue to celebrate the launch of Android 11 , but it also released an AR version of the statue for all ARCore Android phones .

He even has a couple of Easter eggs , including a recipe for making red velvet cake. That is also the internal codename of the operating system in Google .

The future of Android

Android has come a long way from humble beginnings as the product of a small startup. Today, it is the world's leading mobile operating system with around 75% market share .

The Mountain View company is still extremely committed to Android development , although there are indications that its long-term plans could extend further.
